Premier Announces Funding for 2016 NL Summer Games Infrastructure

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was at the Soccer Hut (Topsail Soccer Pitch) in Conception Bay South this morning to announce an $880,000 investment for infrastructure upgrades to sport and recreation facilities in preparation for the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games.

“These upgrades will enhance Summer Games activities in August 2016, but equally as important, they will benefit residents of the Town of Conception Bay South and surrounding areas for many years to come. These sport and recreation infrastructure improvements, and others throughout the province, are providing the environments to support individuals and families in pursuing a healthier, more active lifestyle.
– The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The funding includes $775,000 from the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs for the purchase and installation of new lighting systems for the Stoney Hill and Seal Cove ball fields. This investment is cost-shared on a 70/30 basis from the 2014-17 Multi-Year Capital Works program. A further $105,000 has been provided through the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development to help purchase a score clock and timing equipment. This is in addition to the $60,000 provided last year to refurbish and resurface four tennis courts and to construct new beach volleyball courts.

“The new score clocks and timing equipment, as well as the new lighting, will help ensure a successful 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games. This major sporting event serves to promote and highlight athletic excellence in this province, and provides our young athletes with competitive experiences they will remember fondly for many years to come.
– The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games are held every two years, alternating winter and summer, and are coordinated by the Department of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development in conjunction with Sport Newfoundland and Labrador and provincial sport organizations.

“The addition of the new lighting systems will benefit the people of the region, particularly the Town of Conception Bay South. It will allow the town and its users extended hours of operation and increased playing time for all who use the facility.”
– The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Conception Bay South last hosted the Games in 1996. The 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games (August 13-21) will mark the 20th anniversary of that occasion.

“The Town of Conception Bay South and the host committee are looking forward to welcoming athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, supporters and fans to the Summer Games next year. These infrastructure upgrades will no doubt enhance the experience better for all involved; better position the town to host future sporting events, and benefit residents of this community and surrounding areas in the future.”
– Ken McDonald, Mayor of Conception Bay South

The Provincial Government has also invested over $13 million towards a new $21 million arena in the Town of Conception Bay South. The arena is expected to be completed later this year. Since 2004, more than $225 million has been allocated for recreational and sport infrastructure, recreation programs, and sport development throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
