STEP St. John’s supports the decision by the Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario to switch their respective spots in the hosting rotation for the Canada Summer Games, with Ontario hosting in 2021 and Newfoundland and Labrador to host in 2025.
STEP St. John’s Chair Danny Breen applauds the decision and acknowledges that it will allow more preparation time for all stakeholders to budget for the capital investments that are required. “This decision will enable the host society to properly finance and schedule the facilities that are expected of such a prestigious event”.
The Canada Games is a high-level multi-sport event with a National Artists Program held every two years in Canada, alternating between the Canada Winter Games and the Canada Summer Games. Athletes are strictly amateur, representing their province or territory. St. John’s last hosted the Canada Summer Games in 1977.
